Arsenal announce Unai Emery's full-time successor

Arsenal have confirmed the arrival of former captain Mikel Arteta as Unai Emery's permanent replacement.

The Gunners sacked Emery at the end of November after 18 months in charge of the club and placed former midfielder Freddie Ljungberg in caretaker charge.

Ljunberg has overseen just one win in four matches in charge of the club and their 3-0 defeat at home to Manchester City prompted action by the board.

Arsenal have now decided to raid City for Pep Guardiola's assistant, Arteta, and handed the Spaniard a three-and-a-half-year deal until the summer of 2023.

Arteta, who has been tipped as a potential replacement for Guardiola at City, was linked with the Arsenal hotseat when Arsene Wenger retired in 2017.

The 37-year-old will watch Saturday's game with Everton from the stands before taking over properly on Sunday.

Arsenal currently languish in midtable with only five wins from their first 17 league matches.

Arteta will be tasked with getting Arsenal as high up the table as possible, though the top four already looks out of reach.

Arsenal are seven points off the top four with Tottenham, Chelsea and Manchester United already in better positions to challenge for fourth spot.

Arsenal's best chance of qualifying for next season's Champions League would be by winning this season's Europa League.

The Gunners were drawn against Greek side Olympiacos in the next round of the competition.
