Burnley to double Nick Pope’s wages

Burnley are willing to double Nick Pope’s current wages in order to fend off interest in their star goalkeeper this summer, claims The Sun.

Pope has been a revelation for Burnley this season and has even earned his first senior England call-up for upcoming friendlies against Holland and Italy.

The 25-year-old only signed a new long-term Burnley deal in October but Sean Dyche’s side are ready to offer improved terms for the second time this season.

Newcastle are interested in prising Pope away from Turf Moor in the summer and would be able to offer a significant increase on his reported £15,000-a-week deal at Burnley.

Pope’s impressive performances this season will force Tom Heaton to re-consider his Burnley future in the summer.

The 31-year-old has recently returned to full fitness after dislocating his shoulder in September but will now have to settle for a place on the bench for the remainder of the season.

Pope, who is six years younger than Heaton, is currently the highest WhoScored rated goalkeeper in the Premier League (7.00).

Furthermore, only David de Gea (80.2%) has a better save success rate than Pope (77.5%) in the Premier League this season (5+ apps).
