Ozil seeks assurances from Wenger before signing new Arsenal deal

Mesut Ozil has revealed his long-term future at Arsenal depends on whether Arsene Wenger agrees to stay on as manager beyond the end of his season.

The Germany international has entered the final 18 months of his existing deal at Arsenal and the Gunners have been locked in contract talks with their No.11 in order to secure his long-term future.

However, wage demands were reportedly the initial stumbling block to getting Ozil to sign a new long-term deal but the former Real Madrid creator-en-chief has now revealed he will only commit his future to the club if Wenger signs a new deal too.

“I am very, very happy at Arsenal and have let the club know that I would be ready to sign a new contract. The fans want that I stay and now it is just down to the club” Ozil told German football magazine Kicker, via The Guardian.

“The club knows that I am here most of all because of Arsene Wenger. He is the one who signed me and he is the one whose trust I have. The club also knows that I want to be clear what the manager is going to [do in the future].”

Wenger’s existing deal is due to expire at the end of the season, which would mean his 21-year affinity with the club would come to a close if a new deal is not arranged. However, the 67-year-old is widely expected to pen a new deal to extend his stay, which would then give the green light for Ozil to remain at the club.

Since joining Arsenal from Real Madrid in 2013 Ozil has provided more assists than any other player in the Premier League (36).
