Redmond named in England squad for UEFA Nations League finals

England manager Gareth Southgate has named Southampton forward Nathan Redmond in his 27-man squad for next month’s UEFA Nations League finals, the Football Association has announced.

The Three Lions travel to Portugal at the start of June to prepare for their semi-final match against Netherlands and the winner will contest the final three days later.

Southgate has named a larger squad than normal as players from Liverpool and Tottenham will be involved in the Champions League final on June 1.

There is a place in his squad for captain Harry Kane despite the fact the Tottenham striker has been sidelined since the start of April with an ankle injury.

Kane is, however, on course to recover in time for the Champions League final and therefore fit to turn out for England.

Joe Gomez, Fabian Delph, Jesse Lingard and Harry Winks all missed the England’s international fixtures in March through injury but are named in Southgate’s squad this time around.

There is no place for Chelsea duo Ruben Loftus-Cheek and Callum Hudson-Odoi, however, as both have suffered serious foot injuries, while Luke Shaw, James Maddison and Aaron Wan-Bissaka are also absent.

The Three Lions’ head coach has, however, included Redmond in his plans following the Southampton striker’s strong end to the season.

Redmond was a regular for the England Under-21s under Southgate but has been handed his first senior call-up since March 2017.

The 25-year-old completed more dribbles than any other English player in the Premier League this season (91), while also playing a direct hand in 10 goals.
