Player Ratings: Colombia 1-1 England - Three Lions celebrate first shootout success since Euro 96

Colombia - 6.60 

David Ospina - 5.92 - Saved Jordan Henderson’s penalty, but wasn’t at his best. Made just one save, one cross claim and played a part in Colombia coming under pressure, having yielded a 28% pass success rate.

Santiago Arias - 6.37 - Routinely pegged back and struggled to get forward when handed the chance. Made just one key pass and failed to attempt a cross. 

Yerry Mina - 8.32 - Scored the late equaliser, his third goal at the World Cup. Also made 10 clearances, one tackle and one interception and played the ball out well, returning a 91.4% pass success rate, better than any Colombia starter. 

Davinson Sanchez - 7.05 - A solid performance at the heart of the Colombia backline. Made 12 clearances and two interceptions and can come away with his head high. 

Johan Mojica - 6.59 - Was Colombia’s primary attacking threat down their left and attempted nine crosses, though only two found a teammate. Chipped in with an additional two key passes. 

Carlos Sanchez - 5.87 - Conceded the penalty after bringing down Harry Kane in front of the ref in the opening exchanges of the second half. Conceded a free kick too and was booked for his troubles in a forgettable performance. 

Wilmer Barrios - 7.10 - Lucky to have stayed on the pitch after head butting Jordan Henderson in the first half. However, was defensively sound having made five tackles clearances, though did commit five fouls.  

Jefferson Lerma - 6.08 - Made just the one tackle before his withdrawal on the hour mark and committed one foul. The game seemed to pass him by.  

Juan Quintero - 6.17 - An anonymous performance from the pint-sized playmaker, who struggled to assert himself in the final third. Made just one key pass and returned a 65.1% pass success rate.  

Juan Cuadrado - 8.05 - Provided the assist for Yerry Mina’s late equaliser and made four key passes in the match, more than any other Colombia player. Also chipped in with three dribbles, but should’ve done better with his second half chance. 

Radamel Falcao - 6.61 - Looked isolated without James Rodriguez in the final third until Carlos Bacca was brought on. Won four aerial duels, but never really tested Jordan Pickford in normal time, yet scored his penalty.

England - 6.78 

Jordan Pickford - 6.64 - Didn’t have a great deal to do until stoppage time, producing a superb save only for Colombia to score from the resulting corner. Another excellent stop in the shootout saw England through. 

Kyle Walker - 6.47 - Relatively solid in the most part but a lapse in concentration offered Colombia a great chance to equalise in the second half. 

John Stones - 7.27 - Incredibly composed for 90 minutes and then looked nervy in extra time with some uncharacteristically poor passing. 

Harry Maguire - 7.63 - Improves with every game, willing to dribble or play incisive forward passes from the back and a colossus in the air, winning 12 aerial duels. The vital player to England’s tactical transition. 

Jordan Henderson - 5.77 - Started well enough but lost control physically and mentally, completing just 34 of 48 passes in 120 minutes. Penalty saved in the shootout. 

Kieran Trippier - 8.66 (Man of the Match) - Superb for 90 minutes, lost composure for a period in extra time having failed to clear Yerry Mina’s header off the line. Regained said composure immensely well to convert a crucial penalty and produced eight tackles on the night. 

Jesse Lingard - 5.96 - The game passed him by and his influence was nullified after a decent start, but did keep possession relatively well, with a 91% pass accuracy. 

Dele Alli - 6.50 - Clearly struggling for fitness, worked hard in his time on the pitch regardless but didn’t get into the sort of positions that make him a worthwhile starter. 

Ashley Young - 6.90 - Wasteful in possession at times, he didn’t offer the same threat as Trippier on the opposite flank and was forced off through injury in extra time. 

Raheem Sterling - 6.27 - Good movement but no end product and looks hesitant in his dribbling. May well face the chop against Sweden. 

Harry Kane - 8.63 - A captain’s display in every sense. People will point to the fact that his goal came from the spot but his composure in those situations is unwavering and he held off two powerful centre-backs to relieve pressure on his side, winning 11 of 15 aerial duels.
