REVEALED: Bayern Munich duo among top performing summer signings in Europe
Now we have reached the second international break of the season, we have ample time to take stock of the season so far. At this point league standings across Europe are taking shape and there are some indications which teams will either struggle for the rest of the campaign or challenge for top honours.
Managers and supporters will also have a better idea about some of the players signed during the summer transfer window. Here we take a look at an XI comprised of the best WhoScored rated summer signings from Europe's top five leagues, with additional information about their Football INDEX share prices.
Goalkeeper: Zack Steffen (Fortuna Duesseldorf) - 7.17 rating
Football INDEX share price - N/A
Zack Steffen has been a shrewd signing by Bundesliga outfit Fortuna Duesseldorf but they will now wish they signed him permanently from Manchester City rather than on loan. His performances in Germany have not gone unnoticed by his parent club, who are reportedly now holding out for £20m for his signature at the end of the season.
Fortuna Duesseldorf are one of the contenders to be relegated from the Bundesliga this season and if they are to beat the drop then Steffen will play a key role. In fact, only one goalkeeper in Europe's top five leagues has made more saves than the 24-year-old (34).
Centre-back: Benjamin Pavard (Bayern Munich) - 7.14 rating
Football INDEX share price - £0.91
Bayern Munich wrapped up a deal to sign France international Benjamin Pavard from Bundesliga rivals Stuttgart in January but it wasn't until the summer that the 2018 World Cup winner moved, as part of the club's concious effort to reduce the average age of their squad.
Pavard has showed his verstatility already for Bayern by playing in every position in defence this season. The 23-year-old is one of three Bayern players to have featured in every minute of league action this season and has already scored his first goal and registered his first assist for the club.
Centre-back: Diego Godin (Inter) - 7.18 rating
Football INDEX share price - £0.39
Diego Godin completed his Bosman transfer from Atletico Madrid over the summer and the Uruguay international has made a seamless transition under Antonio Conte. Inter's perfect start to the league campaign came to an end at the weekend but they have still emerged as Juventus' biggest threat for the title.
Inter have the joint-best defensive record in Europe's top five leagues this season (four goals conceded) and Godin has certainly brought some of the Atletico's defensive resolve with him to Italy. The 33-year-old even proved a match winner in Inter's 1-0 win over Udinese, supplying the assist for Stefano Sensi.
Centre-back: Rodrigo Becao (Udinese) - 7.07 rating
Football INDEX share price - £ 0.82
Staying with Udinese, Rodrigo Becao completes the back three in our best rated summer signing XI. Udinese may languish down in 14th in the league but they have proved extremely difficult to break down. The Serie A outfit have conceded just six goals in seven league games this season, which is testamant to Becao's impact.
The 23-year-old is Udinese's highest WhoScored rated player in the league this season (7.07) and is one of only three players to have scored for the club. Furthermore, no player has won the WhoScored Man of the Match award more times than Becao in Serie A this term (two).
Right wing: Enock Kwateng (Bordeaux) - 7.40 rating
Football INDEX share price - £0.52
Bordeaux signed Enock Kwateng on a free transfer in the summer after his contract with Nantes expired and the 22-year-old has made a great start with his new club. Kwateng has two WhoScored Man of the Match awards in six league appearances, with one assist to his name in that time.
Kwateng is the seventh highest WhoScored rated player in Ligue 1 this season (7.40). Furthermore, only two defenders average more tackles per game than the Bordeaux right-back (3.5).
Central midfield: Stefano Sensi (Inter) - 7.57 rating
Football INDEX share price - £2.43
Signed from Sassuolo, Stefano Sensi has made a storming start to life at Inter and is currently their highest WhoScored rated player in the league. This season is already Sensi's best in terms of goals scored and he is only seven matches into his Inter career (3). The 24-year-old has also chipped in with two assists and earned two WhoScored Man of the Match awards.
Central midfield: Idrissa Gueye (Paris Saint-Germain) - 7.71 rating
Football INDEX share price - £0.60
Idrissa Gueye was seen as a solid addition by Paris Saint-Germain in the summer, albeit not the glamour signings the club has become used to, though his impact in the side has been tremendous.
The Senegal international is still excelling when PSG do not have the ball, averaging three tackles per game, but Thomas Tuchel has also developed the midfielder's attacking capabilities in an impressively short space of time.
Gueye had never previously averaged over 1.0 key pass per game in a league campaign prior to this one but is returning 2.0 per game for PSG. It's unlikely he will maintain that figure over the course of the season but it's an early indication of what we can expect from Gueye at PSG. The 30-year-old also averages more passes per game than any player in the division (91.2) and boasts a remarakble success rate of 92.1%.
Central midfield: Philippe Coutinho (Bayern Munich) - 7.53 rating
Football INDEX share price - £2.69
Bayern Munich handed Philippe Coutinho a route out of his Barcelona hell late in the summer transfer window and the early signs are extremely encouraging for Niko Kovac's side. The Bayern head coach has wasted no time lavishing praise on the Brazilian playmaker, who has two goals and two assists in his first four league starts for the club.
Coutinho has wasted no time becoming an integral player for Bayern, so much so that Thomas Muller wants to leave the club when the transfer window opens in January. Coutinho picked up back-to-back WhoScored Man of the Match awards Koeln and Paderborn at the end of last month.
Left wing: Thorgan Hazard (Borussia Dortmund) - 7.40 rating
Football INDEX share price - £1.62
Thogan Hazard is still waiting for his first Borussia Dortmund goal but he has complimented an already creative group of attacking players well since joining from Gladbach over the summer.
In fact, only team-mate Jadon Sancho (5) have registered more assists than Hazard (4) in the Bundesliga this season. Hazard has provided his assists in just five league starts for Lucien Favre's side. The 26-year-old has not shirked his defensive responsibilites either, completing 1.8 tackles per game.
Striker: Sebastien Haller (West Ham) - 7.59 rating
Football INDEX share price - £1.59
Missing out on Maxi Gomez proved a blessing in disguise for West Ham over the summer. While Gomez struggles to get into the Valencia starting XI, Sebastien Haller has made a sensational start to life at the London Stadium.
Haller has scored four goals and provided one assist in his first seven league matches for the Hammers and is winning more aerial duels per game (7.1) than any other player in the division.
Striker: Islam Slimani (Monaco) - 8.09 rating
Football INDEX share price - £0.74
Islam Slimani has been a revelation for Monaco just as it seemed like his career was in danger of petering out. After a failed stint at Leicester, Slimani is back with a bang in France and is the highest WhoScored rated summer signing in Europe's top five leagues at present.
The 31-year-old has remarkably played a direct hand in nine goals in six league appearances for Monaco this season (four goals, five assists). Slimani averages a goal or an assist every 59.6 minutes of playing time in Ligue 1 this term, while the Algeria international has impressively also created the most clear-cut chances (7).
