La Liga Team of the Month: Barcelona trio make the cut in September's best XI
Barcelona are the dominant side in our La Liga team of the month despite failing to win three of five league outings in September. While the defenders faltered, the attackers lived up to the billing, none more so than Argentine sensation Lionel Messi, who was again at his very best to excel for the Blaugrana.
Messi had a direct hand in a goal in four his of five league outings, winning the WhoScored man of the match award in two of those, as he scored three and registered four assists, the latter the most in Spain’s top tier in September. Returns of 17 dribbles and 20 key passes was also the most in La Liga last month as the 31-year-old gained a WhoScored rating of 8.42.
Coutinho and Ousmane Dembele round off the Barcelona contingent, while another attacking duo complete the podium in Spain last month. Wissam Ben Yedder has thrived for a Sevilla side that currently tops La Liga as he made an immediate impact after establishing himself as a first team regular for the Seville giants. Indeed, the Frenchman scored four goals and registered one assist for Sevilla in September, which included a superb man of the match showing in a 6-2 win at Levante.
A surprise face leads the top scorer charts in La Liga with former Middlesbrough man Cristhian Stuani netting eight of Girona’s 10 league goals this season. Of those eight, five were scored in September as the Uruguayan shone on the Girona frontline in September, securing the man of the match awards in meetings with Celta Vigo and SD Huesca.
The three attackers may have thrived in Spain’s top tier, but it was a month to forget for Argentine goalkeeper Axel Werner, whose WhoScored rating (5.62) was the lowest in La Liga in September. The 22-year-old conceded 13 goals in just four outings last month, including eight in a absolute battering at Camp Nou in a month to forget for Werner.
