Eduardo Camavinga finally stamping his mark on Real Madrid

The race among clubs to sign young talent has never been more fierce.  

Real Madrid secured Eduardo Camavinga from Stade Rennais at just 18 years old as part of a new policy aimed at acquiring young superstars. 

With stakes this high, a challenge that clubs of such stature face when signing young talents is an inability to offer them enough minutes to develop.  

However, Carlo Ancelotti has done an incredible job of slowly integrating Camavinga into a midfield alongside Toni Kroos and Luka Modric. This approach has been rewarded, as Camavinga has grown into a player who could be vital for the next decade. 

Currently, Camavinga ranks first for successful tackles, interceptions, and recoveries per 90, and fifth for pass completion rate and successful dribbles per 90 in a Real squad brimming with talent. 

Eduardo Camavinga Transfer Value - how much is he worth now? 

According to FootballTransfer's Player Valuation Model, Camavinga has a current Estimated Transfer Value (ETV) of €84.7m. This makes him the second most valuable U21 player in the world. 

Signing him for only €31m plus variables is a clear example of the success of their transfer strategy. 

The French international recently signed a new contract that will keep him at the Bernabeu until 2029, and his release clause of €1bn points to just how priceless he is for the club. 

Camavinga’s growing importance 

Camavinga’s incredible physical and technical profile made him one of the most sought-after teenagers in the world, and he has developed into a player who is very much living up to the hype. 

He started in only 13 games during his debut La Liga campaign in the 2021/22 season and played a bit-part role en-route to Real’s 14th Champions League title.  

However, subsequent seasons have seen him play an increasingly important role for the Spanish giants. His versatility, being able to play as a defensive midfielder, central midfielder, and left-back, saw him play over 3500 minutes last season. 

This season, he missed some games due to a knee injury but has otherwise been a mainstay in the Los Blancos starting XI as they chase a league and Champions League double. 

Camavinga is clean in possession and sits in the 90th percentile for pass completion across all distances. This makes him capable of linking up play in the middle, while also possessing the ability to find and release the likes of Vinicius and Rodrygo with pinpoint accuracy. 

His energy and work-rate in the midfield is a major reason why Carlo Ancelotti has been able to extract the most from 38-year-old Modric and 34-year-old Kroos. The running he does in the middle covers for their physical deficiencies and allows the veterans to play to their strengths. 

The Frenchman 1.72 successful take-ons and 2.76 carries into the final third both rank him among the top midfielders in La Liga. These bursty dribbles consistently break the lines and disrupt the opposition shape. 

When opponents can’t stop him from driving past them, they are forced to foul him. No other player in La Liga has been fouled more times on a 90-minute basis than Camavinga of those to have made at least 10 appearances. 

The Madrid number 12 has also got destructive defensive instincts, and recovers 7.54 balls and wins 2.27 tackles, putting him in the top 3% of midfielders in the Spanish top division. 

He is utterly dominant in the defensive and middle thirds, and his ability to turn over the ball in vital moments is evident in the fact that he ranks second behind only Lamine Yamal as the player whose defensive actions lead to the most shots per 90. 

Camavinga is incredibly well rounded despite being only 21. He still has a lot of untapped potential as a more advanced player that we should hope to see in the future.
