Transfer recap: Top Serie A signings you may have missed this summer
The World Cup has taken over our consciousness for the past month but now that it’s over, attentions divert immediately to the transfer window ahead of the upcoming 2018/19 campaigns across Europe.
There are just over three weeks until the market slams shut in most cases, though a number of clubs have been busy agreeing deals whilst we’ve had a our eyes fixed on Russia.
Starting off a short series we take a look at a trio of top transfers from Italy's Serie A that may have passed you by.
Fabian Ruiz (Napoli)
While they may have just lost pass master Jorginho to Chelsea, Napoli’s new dawn under Carlo Ancelotti looks set to take a different route from Maurizio Sarri’s approach and new midfield signing Fabian will hope to play a pivotal role. Comfortable taking possession in tight situations, the 22-year-old has an eye for a pass and registered six assists last season, with impressive averages of 70.5 passes, 2.3 dribbles and 2.8 tackles per 90 minutes.
Bryan Cristante (Roma)
It’s been a busy summer for Roma already, signing as many as ten players but losing a key one in the form of Radja Nainggolan. The Belgian’s role in the capital often varied from season to season but one thing he also provided was a goal threat in midfield, so Cristante’s arrival from Sassuolo will certainly help to fill that void. Capable of playing in either a midfield two or three or in the number ten role, the 23-year-old scored 12 times across the league and Europa League last season and is tipped to become a regular feature for the national side in the coming years.
Alban Lafont (Fiorentina)
Lafont has been a household name in French football for so long it seems impossible to think that he only turned 19 in January. The keeper emerged as the first choice at Toulouse at the age of just 17 and since then made 98 appearances in Ligue 1, enduring a relatively difficult campaign last time at as La Tefece finished in the relegation play-off place. His last acts for the club were to keep two clean sheets to ensure the club kept their top-flight status, trading Les Violets for the Viola having made the second most saves in France’s top tier since the start of the 2016/17 campaign (212).
