La Liga Team of the Season revealed with Bellingham the star
After the 2023/24 La Liga season came to a close at the weekend, we’ve taken a look back at the campaign’s standout performers. Represented in our Team of the Season are Girona, Barcelona, Sevilla, Mallorca, Atletico Madrid, Athletic Club, Real Madrid, Real Betis and Villarreal.
Paulo Gazzaniga (Girona) - 6.92
Former Tottenham and Southampton goalkeeper Paulo Gazzaniga lines up between the sticks in our Team of the Season having played a part in Girona’s impressive third placed finish in La Liga this season. Gazzaniga’s efforts helped the Catalan side earn 12 clean sheets, while he also saved one penalty throughout the campaign.
Joao Cancelo (Barcelona) - 7.09
Manchester City loanee Joao Cancelo ends the season as La Liga’s highest rated defender, having registered six goal involvements (2 goals, 4 assists) from full-back. The Portugal international, who was awarded the WhoScored Player of the Match on four occasions this term, also boasts the best success rate of any player to have attempted 75 or more dribbles (61.6%).
Veteran defender and former Real Madrid star Sergio Ramos made his return to La Liga with boyhood club Sevilla this season, and takes a place at the heart of the backline having impressed at the Ramon Sanchez Pizjuan. The 38-year-old netted three goals throughout the campaign, and ends the season as the highest rated centre-back in Spain with a WhoScored rating of 7.06.
Antonio Raillo (Mallorca) - 7.03
Joining Ramos is Mallorca defender Antonio Raillo, whose defensive displays helped the island club secure survival in La Liga this season. Across the campaign, the 32-year-old won more aerial duels (123) than any other defender in the division, and returns a WhoScored rating of 7.03.
Samuel Lino (Atletico Madrid) - 6.92
In his first season at Atletico Madrid, 24-year-old full-back Samuel Lino has impressed under Diego Simeone, and earns a place in our Team of the Season for his showings. The Brazilian returned nine goal involvements (4 goals, 5 assists) from the left flank, while he averaged 1.8 tackles per game as Atleti finished fourth.
Inaki Williams (Athletic Club) - 7.15
Athletic Club attacker Inaki Williams enjoyed his best scoring campaign in La Liga since 2019 when he bagged 12 goals in 2023/24. The 29-year-old Ghana international, whose brother Nico also starred for the Basque side this season, also registered three assists and won four Player of the Match awards in a fine individual campaign.
Jude Bellingham (Real Madrid) - 7.81
With a WhoScored rating of 7.81, Real Madrid star Jude Bellingham is our La Liga Player of the Season for 2023/24. Having arrived from Borussia Dortmund for a fee in excess of £100m last summer, the 20-year-old was a revelation in his first campaign in Spain, scoring 19 goals and registering six assists for Carlo Ancelotti’s title-winning side.
From Real Madrid’s present and future, to their past, as Isco takes the second midfield spot in our XI after an impressive comeback season with Real Betis. The 32-year-old, who made just 10 league starts for Sevilla in 2022/23, has looked back to his very best as the key attraction for Betis this season. In all, Isco managed eight goals and five assists, while he also scooped five Player of the Match awards.
Girona’s Savinho takes up the left-midfield berth after a breakout campaign in Catalonia, in which he registered 19 goal involvements (9 goals, 10 assists). The 20-year-old, who is set to make the move within City Football Group to Manchester City this summer, also completed more successful dribbles than any other player in the Spanish top-flight (104).
Alexander Sorloth (Villarreal) - 7.23
Former Crystal Palace and RB Leipzig striker Alexander Sorloth makes our Team of the Season having enjoyed the second-best scoring campaign of his career with Villarreal this term. In all, the Norwegian attacker was involved in 29 league goals for the Yellow Submarine (23 goals, six assists), contributing to a WhoScored rating of 7.23.
Vinicius Junior (Real Madrid) - 7.41
Rounding off our La Liga Team of the Season is Real Madrid forward Vinicius Junior, who returned 20 goal involvements in his sixth campaign in the Spanish captital as Los Blancos lifted a 36th league title. The 23-year-old, who started just 22 league games throughout the season, after struggling with injury issues, returns a WhoScored rating of 7.41.
