Premier League round-up: The star performers from the midweek action
Here we round up the WhoScored Men of the Match from all 10 midweek Premier League matches.
Cardiff 0-3 Everton - Gylfi Sigurdsson - 8.70 rating
Gylfi Sigurdsson helped inspire Everton to just their third Premier League win of 2019 on Tuesday by netting two goals in a 3-0 triumph over strugglers Cardiff. The 29-year-old scored from both attempts on goal; registered one key pass, completed two dribbles and won two fouls. Sigurdsson now has 11 league goals for the season, his joint-most in a single Premier League campaign.
Huddersfield 1-0 Wolves - Steve Mounie - 8.02 rating
Match-winner Steve Mounie claimed the WhoScored Man of the Match award in Huddersfield's surprise triumph over Wolves. The 24-year-old scored a 91st-minute winner with his fourth shot of the match to boost Huddersfield’s relegation hopes. The towering striker also won 13 aerial duels and registered one key pass.
Leicester 2-1 Brighton - James Maddison - 7.75 rating
Leicester ran out 2-1 winners over Brighton in front of new manager Brendan Rodgers, with James Maddison just edging team-mate Demarai Gray as the WhoScored Man of the Match. Maddison supplied the assist for Leicester’s second goal and registered five key passes in total. The 22-year-old also completed three dribbles and was fouled twice before coming off in the dying embers.
Newcastle 2-0 Burnley - Fabian Schar - 8.59 rating
Fabian Schar is unsurprisingly the WhoScored Man of the Match from Newcastle’s victory at home to Burnley after his stunning long range goal. Schar’s effort is the only goal Newcastle have scored from outside the box in the Premier League this season and it was certainly worth the wait. Schar also had another attempt on goal, won four aerial duels and made seven clearances to help Newcastle keep a clean sheet on Tuesday.
Arsenal 5-1 Bournemouth - Mesut Ozil - 9.23 rating
There hasn’t been much good to say about Mesut Ozil this season but the German playmaker offered a reminder of his qualities in Arsenal’s drubbing of Bournemouth. Ozil opened the scoring in the fourth minute and then supplied the past for Henrikh Mkhitaryan to double their advantage later in the first half. Ozil was also denied by the woodwork. The 30-year-old registered four key passes in total and impressively completed 96.9% of his passes.
Chelsea 2-0 Tottenham - Pedro - 8.14 rating
Chelsea bounced back from their Carabao Cup defeat to Manchester City at the weekend with victory in their north London derby against Tottenham. Pedro opened the scoring for the home side, albeit benefitting from a piece of poor goalkeeping. No player had more attempts on goal than Pedro (3), while the pint-sized winger impressively won two aerial duels. Furthermore, no Chelsea player completed more dribbles than Pedro (2).

Southampton 2-0 Fulham - Oriol Romeu - 8.54 rating
Southampton eased their relegation fears and worsened Fulham’s at the same time after inflicting a 2-0 defeat on their rivals, with Oriol Romeu popping up as an unlikely goalscorer. Added to his goal, the 27-year-old completed six tackles and interceptions combined, while also completing 93.9% of his passes in a dominant midfield display.
Crystal Palace 1-3 Manchester United - Romelu Lukaku - 8.08 rating
Romelu Lukaku guided Manchester United’s injury-hit squad to three huge points at Selhurst Park on Wednesday night by scoring his first brace in United colours since September. The 25-year-old put a straightforward miss behind him to score with his only shots on target, while also winning four aerial duels.
Manchester City 1-0 West Ham - Lukasz Fabianski - 7.57 rating
Despite having 76% possession, it didn’t like it would be Manchester City’s night. Pep Guardiola’s side had 20 shots to West Ham’s two and required a Sergio Aguero penalty to get past West Ham shot-stopper Lukasz Fabianski. The 33-year-old made five saves and successfully claimed three crosses in another eye-catching display for the Hammers.
Liverpool 5-0 Watford - Virgil van Dijk - 9.54 rating
Virgil van Dijk stole the WhoScored Man of the Match award from team-mate Trent Alexander-Arnold with two goals at the end of Liverpool’s thumping 5-0 win over Watford. The 27-year-old scored as many goals against Watford as his previous 41 Premier League appearances for Liverpool combined. Van Dijk won five aerial duels and made nine clearances to help Liverpool keep another clean sheet.
