World Cup warm up: The permutations ahead of Group F’s conclusion on Wednesday

The round of 16 matches are taking shape and two more teams will join Argentina, Portugal, Uruguay, Spain, France, Croatia, Russia and Denmark from Group F on Wednesday afternoon.

All four teams from Group F have a chance of qualifying for the knockout phase of the 2018 World Cup, but Mexico and Germany are favourites to advance.

Mexico go into Wednesday’s match against Sweden top of Group F after winning their first two matches, including a shock win over reigning champions Germany.

Juan Carlos Osorio’s side only need a point in Yekaterinburg to go through as group winners. Mexico will also be guaranteed of progression if Germany fall to defeat against Korea in Kazan.

Sweden, who have qualified for the knockout phase in each of the last three World Cups they have participated in, currently occupy third place and need to beat Mexico or better Germany’s result to prolong their stay in Russia.

Germany’s chances of making the round of 16 were infinitely boosted after Toni Kroos’ stunning late winner over Sweden in gameweek 2 and the reigning champions will guarantee qualification with a two-goal winning margin or by bettering Sweden’s result.

A draw in both fixtures on Wednesday afternoon will ensure Mexico finish top and second place is awarded to the team in the higher-scoring draw. In the result of both games ending in the same scoreline, Germany will advance due to their superior head-to-head record over Sweden.

South Korea are currently bottom of Group F and to have any chance of finishing second they need to stun Germany and hope Mexico beat Sweden.

If results go as expected, then Mexico will top the group and set up a round of 16 clash against Switzerland, leaving Germany to prepare for a mouth-watering knockout tie with Brazil.
