Group G round-up: Premier League quintet make up top performers
Belgium ultimately trumped England to top spot in Group G, with Adnan Januzaj’s second half strike the difference in Kaliningrad. Wins last weekend over Tunisia and Panama guaranteed the pair’s spot in the last-16, with Thursday’s match up a mere formality to determine who finished first. In a group England and Belgium were expected to dominate, it’s no wonder there is ample Premier League representation in the top performing players from Group G, of those to start at least two of the three games.
5. Kevin De Bruyne (Belgium) - 7.65 Rating
Kevin De Bruyne made an impressive nine key passes across his two outings in the group stages, with the Belgium star, like a number of England and Belgium players, rested for the final group game, otherwise that number would have been higher. The creative star made an additional five tackles and interceptions combined, and chipped in with one assist to help return a WhoScored.com rating of 7.65.
4. Kieran Trippier (England) - 8.22 Rating
Kieran Trippier made the right wing-back starting spot his own with two solid displays against Tunisia and Panama. The Tottenham man made seven key passes across his two outings, with his six against Tunisia the second most in a World Cup match so far. Only Aaron Mooy (10) has made more accurate crosses than Trippier (9) and has helped return a WhoScored.com rating of 8.22.
3. Eden Hazard (Belgium) - 8.71 Rating
Podiuming in third in Group G is Belgium wing wizard and Chelsea star Eden Hazard with a WhoScored.com rating of 8.71. The 27-year-old was in traditionally fine form as he scored two and registered one assist for the Red Devils to help Roberto Martinez’s side to top spot. Hazard also completed eight dribbles across his two appearances, with the Belgian star now well-rested ahead of their assault for international glory.
2. Romelu Lukaku (Belgium) - 8.85 Rating
Romelu Lukaku was ruthlessly efficient in front of goal for Belgium as he scored four goals from just five shots across 149 minutes of World Cup action so far, a return of a goal every 37.3 minutes. Lukaku is one of the favourites to land the golden boot and understandably so given his flying international form and the array of creative talent in support. The 25-year-old also won seven of the nine aerial duels he contested to help gain a WhoScored.com rating of 8.85.
1. Harry Kane (England) - 8.96 Rating
Pipping Lukaku to top spot is Premier League adversary Harry Kane. The England striker has scored more goals (5) than any other player at the World Cup so far and was named the WhoScored.com man of the match in both meetings with Tunisia and Panama. The Tottenham star has scored his five goals from just six shots on goal and chipped in with one key pass and two interceptions from his two appearances to help gain a WhoScored.com rating of 8.96, that return better than any other player at the World Cup to date.
