Southampton midfielder banned for six weeks

Southampton midfielder Victor Wanyama has been banned for five games after picking up his third red card of the season, the Football Association has confirmed.

Wanyama, 24, was shown a straight red card in Saints’ 1-0 win over West Ham on Saturday evening following a strong tackle on Dimitri Payet.

The Kenyan midfielder was shown two yellow cards in their win over Bournemouth in November and also dismissed for two bookable offences in the 1-0 defeat to Norwich at the start of the year.

However the combative midfielder has now been ruled out for their next five games and won’t be available for selection until their home match with Liverpool on March 19.

In fact, only Gladbach midfielder Granit Xhaka has picked up as many red cards than Wanyama in Europe’s top five leagues this season (3).
