Long-term United target agrees new deal

Benfica have announced Manchester United target Nicolas Gaitan has signed a new four-year deal with a €45m (£32.4m) release clause.

Gaitan, 27, has been regularly linked with a move to United in the past but Louis van Gaal will have to assess other targets in January after the Argentine winger extended his stay at Benfica.

The Argentina international has developed into one of the biggest stars in the Portuguese top-flight since joining Benfica in 2010 and he is delighted to commit his future.

“This renewal is fantastic. It’s a vote of confidence from the club and I’m delighted,” Gaitan told Benfica’s TV channel.

“It was a quick and easy decision. Both parties are happy. I’m very happy at Benfica, they’re one of Europe’s top clubs.”

“The topic of leaving is expected when the market opens,” he said. “It would have to be something extremely good to take me away from here because I’m happy at one club.”

“We’re leading the championship but also doing well in the Champions League. I feel good working with the group we have.”

In the Champions League this season, only four other players are averaging more dribbles per game than Gaitan (4).
