Manchester City are ready to lavish €40m (£29m) on Inter captain Mauro Icardi in the summer, according to Gazzetta dello Sport.

Icardi, 22, was made Inter captain at the start of the campaign but has courted interest from Premier League duo City and Chelsea.

However, Manuel Pellegrini’s side may hit a snag in their pursuit of the Argentine with the report claiming the youngster wants to remain at Inter and led them to their first Scudetto in six years.

There is also the fact that Inter are not looking to sell Icardi, but that situation could change if his position in Roberto Mancini’s plans becomes less important. The Serie A outfit are also aware that they may need to sell a star player to fund any more business in the future.

Since the start of last season, only Gonzalo Higuain (32) has scored more goals in Serie A than Icardi (26).
