Manchester United in talks for £55m-rated midfielder

Manchester United are pondering a January move for Sporting ace Bruno Fernandes after holding initial talks with the Portuguese giants, claims the London Evening Standard.

Sporting are keen to offload their star man this month and have officials in England trying to thrash out a deal with United.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is desperate to bolster his midfield options this month and specifically wants to sign a playmaker to replace the likes of Jesse Lingard and Juan Mata.

United were heavily linked with a move for Fernandes during the summer but felt they were being used to drive his price up and ultimately decided to look elsewhere.

However, Fernandes’ availability this month has made the Portugal international an appealing option for the Red Devils and on Sunday Solskjaer even flew out to watch the 25-year-old against Porto.

Fernandes actually turned in his worst performance of the league campaign (6.66 rating) after Sporting lost 2-1 at home to their rivals.

However, the attacking midfielder has been in terrific form for Sporting this season with six goals and seven assists in 14 league appearances.

Moreover, the Sporting midfielder has played a direct hand in more goals than any other player in Liga NOS since the beginning of last season (52 goals in 47 appearances). Fernandes is also the best WhoScored rated player in that time (7.82).
