West Bromwich Albion have confirmed Chris Brunt will be sidelined for six months with a knee injury, ruling him out of the Euro’s in the summer for Northern Ireland.
Brunt, 31, has endured an awful few weeks after being struck by a coin thrown by one of his own supporters following West Brom’s exit from the FA Cup at the hands to Championship strugglers Reading.
The former West Brom captain was a regular fixture in Northern Ireland’s Euro 2016 qualification campaign that saw them surprise all by topping a group that contained Romania, Greece and Hungary.
However, the midfielder, who has been converted into a left back by Tony Pulis this season, is now ruled out for six months after suffering a rupture of the anterior cruciate ligament in his right knee against Palace at the end of February.
“It’s a big blow for Chris and everyone is feeling for him right now,” Pulis told West Brom’s official website.
“It will be disappointing for us not to have him for the rest of the season because he is a terrific player who gives the team great balance.
“But obviously it is made even more cruel because it has denied him a career highly with Northern Ireland this summer.
Having scored at least two goals in each of his previous five Premier League campaigns for West Brom, Brunt is currently without a league goal since the penultimate goal of last season (vs Chelsea).
Additionally, since Aug 2010, Brunt has made at least 18 more assists than any other West Brom player in the Premier League (37).
