McCarthy replaces Forster in the England squad

The Football Association have announced that Fraser Forster has been replaced in the England squad by his Southampton understudy Alex McCarthy.

Forster, 27, injured his arm in training with the squad earlier this week and will now miss Sam Allardyce’s first game in charge of the national team on Sunday.

As a result the England manager has called up McCarthy to the senior squad for the first time in his career, having only ever made three appearances for the Under-21s prior to this.

McCarthy has spent the last few seasons finding his way between spells at Queens Park Rangers, Crystal Palace and now Southampton. However, before that, McCarthy made the most saves in the 2013/14 Championship campaign with Reading (175).
