Bayern Munich president calls unsettled winger ‘desperate’
Bayern Munich have risked pushing Douglas Costa closer to a summer exit after their president, Uli Hoeness, labelled the Brazilian ‘desperate’ in his attempts to get an improved contract.
Costa, 26, revealed earlier in the week that he would address his future at the end of the season after growing unhappy at the club under Carlo Ancelotti.
The Brazil international was phenomenal for Bayern in his first season at the club under the tutelage of Pep Guardiola but has seen his first-team opportunities limited this season with the experience of Franck Ribery and Arjen Robben preferred when the duo are both fit.
Costa hinted that a move to the Premier League could be on the cards in the summer but Bayern have attempted to call the player’s bluff in an attempt to be rewarded with improved terms on his current deal that isn’t due to expire until 2020.
Hoeness, in an interview with TZ, via The Independent, claimed Costa’s attempts were a “desperate attempt to get a higher salary”. Adding, “that doesn’t work with us. He can try 10 more times. He is certainly not a hardship case.”
In the last two Bundesliga campaigns Costa has completed the most dribbles (126), despite the fact he has only started eight league games this season.
