Chelsea look to Germany in striker pursuit

Chelsea are readying a £20m move for Freiburg frontman Gian-Luca Waldschmidt as they seek to add a new striker to their ranks this summer, reports The Metro.

The Blues are looking to add a new frontman to the books in the transfer window, with Michy Batshuayi and Olivier Giroud both linked with moves away from Stamford Bridge.

Timo Werner had been a target for Chelsea, yet with Liverpool leading the race for the Germany international, the west London side will turn their attention to Waldschmidt.

The 23-year-old has scored just five league goals this season, but excelled at the U21 Euros last summer, where his seven goals earned him the Golden Boot as Germany lost to Spain in the final.

Head coach Frank Lampard was eager to boost his attack in January, yet failed in pursuits for Edinson Cavani and Dries Mertens, though Giroud staying at the club eased Chelsea's goalscoring woes in 2020.

The Frenchman's contract expires in the summer and he is set to depart in the summer as he goes in search of regular game time ahead of next year's rescheduled European Championship.

Waldschmidt is highly thought of in Germany and has already been capped by the senior side, yet has made just nine league starts for Freiburg this term.
