Gianluigi Donnarumma has completed a sensational u-turn on his future after agreeing to a new five-year deal with AC Milan, reports Sky Italia, via Football Italia.
The Serie A giants announced at the end of last month that Donnarumma had rejected a new contract and would not be renewing with his boyhood club, fuelling suggestions he would make a big money move away this summer.
With 12 months left to run on his existing deal, Milan were faced with the prospect of losing the Italy international for nothing next summer, but Vincenzo Montella’s side have made a breakthrough in discussions since the teenager returned from the U21 European Championships.
Donnarumma will reportedly receive a massive wage hike and could even become the third highest-paid player in the division, which is staggering considering he only made his Milan debut in October 2015. Donnarumma even turned down the chance to join Paris Saint-Germain this summer where he would have earned more than two times what he will now receive from Milan.
Crucially, however, Donnarumma’s agent, Mino Raiola, has successfully managed to convince Milan to include a release clause in the new deal, which is where contract talks broke down before.
The 18-year-old will have a €50m (£43.9m) release clause if Milan fail to qualify for the Champions League by the 2018/19 campaign, while that will double to €100m (£87.8m) if they do return to UEFA’s premier competition in that time.
Donnarumma, who endured a difficult campaign with the Italy U21 squad this summer, finished last season as the highest rated goalkeeper in Europe’s top five leagues (7.05 rating).
