La Liga giants dominate Team of the Week

The big news in La Liga this weekend was that Barcelona extended their advantage in the league to three points with a game in hand after beating nearest rivals Atletico Madrid 2-1 on Saturday.

However, there was no space for any Barcelona players in the latest La Liga Team of the Week, which was dominated by Real Madrid, who thumped Espanyol 6-0 on Sunday to get back on track under Zinedine Zidane following their 1-1 draw with Real Betis.

Cristiano Ronaldo drew level with Barcelona’s Luis Suarez as joint-top goalscorer in La Liga after scoring a hat-trick in the romp, meaning he has now scored eight goals in his last two matches against the Catalonian outfit.

Furthermore, a staggering 42.1% of his 19 league goals for the season have come against Espanyol.

Ronaldo wasn’t the only Galactico to make the XI. In fact, the most notable inclusion was James Rodriguez, who has come in for fierce criticism in recent weeks regarding his off field behaviour. The Colombia international scored his first goal since the start of November and also registered his sixth assist of the season.

Keylor Navas and Karim Benzema were the final two Madrid players to make the Team of the Week, with Benzema on hand to score for the fifth game in a row and his 18th league goal in 17 appearances this season. As for Navas, his latest performance was good enough to earn back his spot in the La Liga Team of the Season.
