Everton have announced club record signing Gylfi Sigurdsson is sidelined for six to eight weeks with a knee injury.
Sigurdsson was sent to see a specialist on Monday after sustaining a knee injury in Saturday’s 2-0 win over Brighton.
There were fears the Iceland international would miss the rest of the season and the 2018 World Cup but Everton have confirmed he will return before could even return before the end of the campaign.
“Following consultation with a specialist, it is anticipated that Gylfi Sigurdsson’s knee injury, sustained in Saturday’s Premier League win over Brighton, will keep him sidelined for between six and eight weeks,” a statement read on the club’s official website.
Even though Sigurdsson has failed to live up to his £45m price tag this season, his absence for the next two months is a huge blow to Sam Allardyce’s side.
The Toffees are currently 10 points clear of the bottom three with eight games remaining and will now try to cement a place in the top half of the table.
The 28-year-old has created at least 13 more goalscoring opportunities than any other Everton player in the Premier League this season (38).
