Inter earmarked former Manchester United target as Lukaku alternative

Inter have approached Bundesliga side Frankfurt about a deal for former Manchester United target Ante Rebic, claims Gianluca Di Marzio.

The Serie A giants are poised to miss out on first-choice target Romelu Lukaku despite months of talks with United about a potential deal.

Inter have had several bids for Lukaku knocked back by United, who are adamant they will not accept a deal for less than £80m.

Juventus have now leapfrogged Inter in the race to sign Lukaku after proposing a swap deal involving out of favour forward Paulo Dybala.

Inter have not given up hope of signing the Belgium international but are now assessing alternative targets and have identified Rebic as a possible signing.

Atletico Madrid are also interested in the Croatia international after missing out on Real Madrid ace James Rodriguez but Inter are considered favourites for his signature.

Rebic, who was linked with a move to United during Jose Mourinho’s time at the club, represents a significantly cheaper option than Lukaku with a valuation of €40m (£36.7m).

The 25-year-old played a direct hand in 13 goals in 28 league appearances for Frankfurt last season (nine goals, four assists), five more goal involvement than the 2017/18 campaign.
