Leeds star signs new long-term deal

Leeds have announced Pontus Jansson has put questions about his future to bed by signing a new five-year deal running until June 2022.

Jansson established himself as one of the best defenders in the Championship last season and did enough to convince Leeds to make his loan stint from Torino permanent as early as January.

The 26-year-old still had three years left to run on his previous deal but Leeds have moved to reward the Sweden international with a bumper new contract as a reward for his growing importance.

Leeds fended off interest in Jansson from Premier League clubs during the summer and the former Torino defender is delighted to have penned a new deal.

“I am really happy, this has been my second home since day one,” Jansson told the club’s official website. “Me and my family love it here, everyone has been so nice to us and I hope to say here and make people happy.

“Leeds have been fantastic since day one and when I play good on the pitch I get the love from the fans and I am really pleased to be staying here, the supporters, club and team-mates are all really good to me and I hope I can give something back now.

“Leeds are a club that belongs in the Premier League and since day one I have said I wanted to play in the Premier League with Leeds, we are now getting closer and closer and we are on our way to something good.

“From day one I have always believed in this and now the fans, club and Andrea the new owner do, a lot of things have changed and we play better football now, so it is a lot more positive in all perspectives.

“There have been a lot of contract extensions and new signings who have come into the team, we have all helped each other in a good way and we have started the season well.”

Since the start of last season, only four players have blocked more shots than Jansson in the Championship (54), while he was also named in the WhoScored Championship Team of the Month for September.
