Atletico Madrid striker signs new deal

Atletico Madrid have announced Fernando Torres has put pen to paper on a new one-year deal until the end of next season.

The 33-year-old’s previous deal was due to expire this summer and he was heavily linked with a shock move to Mexican side Queretaro at the start of June.

However, Atletico have now retained the services of their former captain for another season in the wake of their FIFA-imposed transfer ban this summer.

Torres returned to the Vicente Calderon in January 2015 after stints at Liverpool, Chelsea and AC Milan. In the last two La Liga campaigns only Antoine Griezmann (38) has scored more goals for Atletico than Torres (19).
