A bad month for Barnsley is about to get made a lot worse with news Marley Watkins is poised to hand in a transfer request, according Sky Sports.
Barnsley have already lost talented teenager James Bree to Aston Villa and leading goalscorer Sam Winnall to Sheffield Wednesday, while they are also set to lose star man Conor Hourihane, who is set to join Bree at Villa, before the end of the month.
To compound what has been a miserable month for the Tykes, Watkins is now also keen to leave the club this month despite the fact his contract is due to expire at the end of the season.
Ipswich Town and Bristol City are two clubs that have already been linked with a move for the 26-year-old and suitors will have been encouraged by news the Welsh forward wants to leave Oakwell this month.
Watkins isn’t the only Barnsley player to receive attention from a Championship rival, with Norwich City also keen on signing Angus MacDonald following a string of impressive performances in defence for Paul Heckingbottom’s side this season.
Watkins has played a direct hand in 13 league goals in 23 appearances for Barnsley this season (six goals, seven assists). Given Hourihane has played a direct hand in 17 league goals, it will decimate Barnsley’s creativity to lose both.
