Butland to start against Italy

Jack Butland will be given the chance to audition for a starting berth at the 2018 World Cup against Italy on Tuesday night, England manager Gareth Southgate has confirmed.

Southgate named four goalkeepers in his 27-man squad for the current international break and gave Jordan Pickford the full 90 minutes against Holland on Friday.

The England boss will now give Butland the chance to stake a claim for the No.1 jersey for the World Cup in the summer when the Three Lions host Italy at Wembley.

Joe Hart and Burnley’s Nick Pope were also included in the England squad but look set to miss out on the chance to catch Southgate’s eye.

Of goalkeepers used by Southgate during his 15 matches in charge, Pickford has the highest WhoScored rating (7.69), followed by Butland (6.83).
