Burnley manager Sean Dyche wants to sign former Chelsea defender Gary Cahill on a free transfer, claims The Sun.
Cahill is a free agent after his contract with Chelsea expired at the end of last season and is yet to find a new club for next season.
The 33-year-old spent seven years at Chelsea but his last 12 months at the club were a nightmare by his own admission.
Cahill dropped completely out of the picture under Maurizio Sarri and was limited to just two substitute appearances in the Premier League across the entire campaign.
Burnley are now ready to hand Cahill with another crack in the Premier League, as Dyche looks to add the defender’s experience to his ranks for next season.
Dyche relied heavily on Ben Mee and James Tarkowski last season after it quickly became clear their club-record signing Ben Gibson could not be trusted.
Burnley are willing to hand Cahill a £30,000-a-week deal, which represents a huge pay-cut on what he earned during his time at Stamford Bridge.
The Clarets need to rediscover their defensive resolve for the upcoming campaign after some uncharacteristic performances last season.
Burnley conceded 29 more goals in the Premier League last season (68) than they did in the 2017/18 campaign (39).
In fact, only three teams conceded more goals than Burnley in England’s top-flight last term and Dyche will hope Cahill’s experience can improve their defensive record.
