Roma turn to Newcastle for Pjanic replacement

Roma are interested in signing Newcastle midfielder Georgino Wijnaldum as a replacement for Miralem Pjanic, according to Il Messaggero, via Sky Sports.

Wijnaldum, 25, only joined Newcastle last summer in a £14.5m deal from PSV Eindhoven but he could be available to leave St. James’ park in the summer following relegation to the Championship last season.

The Netherlands international is already being touted as a potential transfer target for Roma, who could be forced to sell key midfielder Pjanic this summer in order to meet Financial Fair Play restrictions.

Despite struggling for consistency in his first season in the Premier League, Wijnaldum still managed to play a direct hand in more goals than any other Newcastle teammate (16 – 11 goals, five assists).

Incredibly, all 11 of his league goals came at St. James’ Park. Only Jamie Vardy (14) and Sergio Aguero (15) scored more goals on home soil in the league last season.
