Barcelona are keeping a close eye on contract talks between Mesut Ozil and Arsenal with a view to making a move for the Germany international at the end of the season, reports The Daily Mirror.
Ozil has entered the final 18 months of his existing deal with the Gunners but has been locked in contract talks for most of the season, although the Premier League outfit have failed to convince their creative ace to commit his long-term future to the club.
The 28-year-old has dismissed suggestions he is holding out for a mega deal from Arsenal and has pinned the fact he hasn’t signed a new contract down to the fact Arsene Wenger’s future at the club is also up in the air.
Wenger’s current deal is due to expire at the end of the current campaign and it remains to be seen whether he will be offered a new one having failed to lead Arsenal to Premier League glory in over a decade.
As a result, Barcelona are interested in signing Ozil, although they would have to overcome some politics in order to secure his services given the German spent three years with Real Madrid before moving to Arsenal in 2013.
Barcelona would not be the only team interested in Ozil’s services should Arsenal be forced to sell in the summer, with Bayern Munich manager Carlo Ancelotti also keen on the Arsenal No.11.
In the last four Premier League campaigns Ozil has registered at least six more assists than any other player (37).
