Tottenham defender insists he is happy at the club

Tottenham defender Jan Vertonghen is happy with the north London side, but is unsure if he will get a new contract at the club.

The Belgian is entering his eighth season at the club, but has just one year left to run on his current deal with Spurs.

Vertonghen has established himself as a key man for Spurs and he insists his focus is on the season ahead.

"I just want to focus on this year, I know I have got one year left so I know a lot of questions will be asked," Vertonghen is quoted as saying by Sky Sports.

"I have said it before, I am very happy at the club. The supporters have been great for me, the manager has improved me a lot and has a lot of confidence in me.

"I feel very, very good physically so I am not sure what is going to happen this year, I can only say I am happy where I am at and I feel the support from the manager, team-mates and the squad.”

At the time of writing, Jack Clarke and Tanguy Ndombele are the only new signings at Spurs, with the former returning to Leeds on loan, but the 32-year-old defender is adamant the club is ready for the coming campaign with or without reinforcements before Thursday’s 5pm deadline.

"We just look at ourselves, we want to be in the best shape possible, whoever comes in or goes out that is out of our hands," Vertonghen added.

“We have got a great squad with great guys and whoever is here is ready to play for Spurs."
