Jose Mourinho has closed the book on David de Gea leaving Manchester United after ruling out a summer switch to Real Madrid.
The Premier League giants were expecting a bid from Madrid this summer and Mourinho even suggested the club were willing to do business with their Spanish counterparts for their No.1 goalkeeper.
De Gea has been heavily linked with a move back to the Spanish capital in the last few years but Mourinho insists the 26-year-old will stay at Old Trafford this season.
“I can guarantee he’s not going this season, that I can,” The Daily Mirror quote Mourinho as saying at a press conference on United’s pre-season tour of America.
“My feeling is it will be very difficult for him to go. He’s a very honest boy, very straight. He was contacted for a long time, the club was closed, then we opened, because I always have this feeling when a player has a desire to go, I don’t like to stop them because, in the end, you don’t get what you expect.
“So we opened it and then I decided to close, and then the feeling from him is really, really good, I see him happy and 100 per cent he stays with us.”
De Gea has established himself as one of the best goalkeepers in the world in recent years and news he will stay with United will only enhance their chances of winning the Premier League next season.
In fact, in the last four Premier League campaigns De Gea has kept more clean sheets than any other goalkeeper (39).
