Stoke City chairman’s chairman Peter Coates has revealed signing a new central midfielder is at the top of their priority list when the transfer window reopens in January.
The Potters signed nine players over the summer and have taken their time to hit full stride this season, but they’ve now won four of their last six matches in the Premier League to move within one point of the top 10.
The January transfer window is usually a busy period for clubs like Stoke and Coates has already pinpointed back up for Glenn Whelan as the position to strengthen in the coming months.
“We are not short of players but we might want extra cover in certain positions,” the Stoke chairman is quoted as saying by Sky Sports News.
“A player that springs to mind is Glenn Whelan. If Glenn wasn’t there, that might make things difficult for us because we haven’t got another player like Glenn.
“We’ve only get Glenn as what you might call a proper defensive midfield player. We’ve got Charlie [Adam] in there at the moment who’s doing well. I thought he played particularly well in the last game against Chelsea when he’s showed a lot of discipline, but it’s not his natural home because he’s a more attacking player.”
