Everton’s record signing set for long spell out

Everton have announced club-record signing Gylfi Sigurdsson will see a specialist on Monday evening to find out the extent of his knee injury.

The Iceland international managed to play the full 90 minutes against Brighton on Saturday despite injuring his knee during Everton’s 2-0 win.

Sam Allardyce’s side know Sigurdsson faces a spell on the sidelines but are refusing to put a timeframe on the injury until he has visited a specialist.

“Gylfi Sigurdsson will see a specialist this evening to determine a timeframe for recovery from the knee injury he sustained in Saturday’s Premier League win over Brighton at Goodison,” a statement read on the club’s official website.

“It is anticipated that the 28-year-old Icelandic international could be sidelined for several weeks but it will only be after consulting with the specialist that a definite timeframe will be known.”

Everton shattered their club transfer record to sign Sigurdsson from Swansea in a deal worth £45m in the summer and his absence will be a blow for Allardyce’s side even if he has failed to live up to the price tag.

Sigurdsson will almost certainly miss Iceland’s upcoming friendlies against Mexico and Peru and his national team will hope the knee injury doesn’t rule him out of the 2018 World Cup.

The 28-year-old has played a direct hand in seven Premier League goals for Everton this season (four goals, three assists), while he has also created at least 13 more goalscoring chances than any other team-mate (38).

Everton are now 10 points clear of the bottom three after beating Brighton on Saturday.
