Barcelona target offered 12-month extension

Sevilla are desperate to keep Jorge Sampaoli away from the clutches of Barcelona and have offered their manager a new one-year extension that would keep him at the club until 2019.

Sampaoli’s existing deal is due to expire at the end of next season and reportedly only has a release clause of €1.5m (£1.3m) that Sevilla are understandably keen to change.

The 56-year-old was considered a gamble when Sevilla made him Unai Emery’s successor at the start of the season but he has done a sensational job at the helm, transforming Sevilla into candidates in the league and the Champions League.

Sevilla president Jose Castro appeared on Monday’s El Larguero and confirmed the club had offered Sampaoli a new 12-month contract as Barcelona eye a summer move to make the former Chile head coach Luis Enrique’s replacement.

Sampaoli has won 20 of his 36 matches in charge of Sevilla, with the Spanish side currently third in La Liga and favourites to progress past Leicester in the last 16 of the Champions League.
