Morata leaves Chelsea for Spain return

Atletico Madrid have confirmed they have signed Chelsea striker Alvaro Morata an 18-month loan deal.

Morata has spent the last two years at Chelsea after joining from Real Madrid in a club-record deal worth £60m.

The 26-year-old never really settled in London and has now secured a return to Spain and joins Atletico for the first time since leaving them as a boy.

Morata came through Atletico’s youth academy before leaving as a 14-year-old and later joining Real Madrid, where he turned professional.

Sevilla and Barcelona were both linked with a move for Morata this month but Diego Siemone’s side have won the race for his signature.

Chelsea have sanctioned Morata’s departure after getting a deal over the line for Gonzalo Higauin from Juventus, whom Maurizio Sarri wanted to sign last summer.

There are few positives you can say about Morata’s time at Chelsea but he was always a threat in the air.

In fact, since the beginning of last season only Harry Kane (8) has scored more headed goals than Morata (7) in the Premier League.
