Tottenham ace to reject other offers for Manchester United
Tottenham defender Toby Alderweireld wants to join Manchester United and is prepared to run down his contract if it fails to materialise this summer, claims The Daily Mirror.
Mauricio Pochettino’s side are open to offers for Alderweireld but believe he is worth as much as Virgil Van Dijk, who joined Liverpool for £75m at the start of the year.
Alderweireld dropped down the pecking order at Tottenham last season after refusing to commit to a new deal and United are keen to bolster their defensive options with his arrival before Thursday’s deadline.
Jose Mourinho’s side have no interest in matching Tottenham’s stunning valuation, as Alderweireld has entered the final 12 months of his current deal and will turn 30 towards the end of next season.
Tottenham have an option to extend Alderweireld’s contract by a further 12 months but by doing so they will activate a £25m release clause during the final two weeks of the 2019 summer transfer window.
Paris Saint-Germain have also been credited with an interest in Alderweireld this summer but the Belgian centre-back only has eyes on a move to Old Trafford.
Alderweireld is reportedly even willing to run down his contract and snub advances from other clubs to join Mourinho’s side, even if it fails to materialise this summer.
A three-month lay-off, coupled with the fact Davinson Sanchez was preferred limited Alderweireld to just 14 league appearances last season.
Renowned for his long passing ability, Alderweireld average more accurate long balls (7.9) than any other Premier League outfielder last term.
