Injured Carrick withdraws from England squad

Manchester United midfielder Michael Carrick will not be available for selection when England host Switzerland on Tuesday after withdrawing from Roy Hodgson’s squad through injury.

Carrick, 34, was an unused substitute during England’s comprehensive 6-0 win over San Marino on Saturday and had been expected to start at Wembley against the Swiss.

However, he will return to Manchester after suffering an unspecified injury during training and may now be unavailable for United when they take on Liverpool when the Premier League resumes on Saturday.

The former Tottenham midfielder has struggled to nail down a regular starting berth at United this season following the arrival of Bastian Schweinsteiger earlier in the summer.

In fact, of United players to have featured in all four league matches this season, only Sergio Romero (6.35) has gained a lower WhoScored rating than Carrick (6.49).
