Maguire eyes Manchester United captaincy

Harry Maguire is flattered by Manchester United’s interest and wants to become club captain, claims The Sun.

United have earmarked Maguire as a top transfer target this summer but have already had a bid rejected for the commanding centre-back by Leicester.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side are understood to be £10m short of Leicester’s eye-watering £85m valuation of the England international.

Leicester will allow Maguire to leave the club this summer but only if he is made the world’s most expensive defender of all-time.

United believe their offer is more than fair and have used Matthijs de Ligt’s £67.6m move to Juventus as a reference point.

Maguire is keen to emulate childhood heroes Steve Bruce, Rio Ferdinand and Nemanja Vidic at Old Trafford by becoming a United hero.

The 26-year-old also has his eyes set on becoming United captain in the future and is reportedly becoming increasingly frustrated by Leicester’s stance on his valuation.

Of players that contested at least 30 aerial duels in the Premier League last season, Maguire had the best success rate (77.6%).
