Schweinsteiger “flattered” by United interest, admits Bayern CEO
Bastian Schweinsteiger will have crunch talks with Bayern Munich about his future this weekend after the Bavarian’s CEO Karl-Heinz Rummenigge admitted the Germany captain is "flattered" by the interest shown by Manchester United.
The 30-year-old is reportedly caught in two minds about whether or not to leave the Bundesliga giants having been at the club since 1998. The German midfielder’s contract is set to expire next summer and there is yet to be talks about extending his deal, with Louis van Gaal allegedly keen on reuniting with him at Old Trafford.
Schweinsteiger’s future is likely to be decided this weekend after Rummenigge told reporters both parties would be sitting down for talks in the coming days, but conceded that the veteran is aware of United’s interest.
"I have spoken to Bastian on the phone while we have been on holiday and will speak again now that he is back," he said. "I cannot deny the fact that I have understood during these conversations that he is flattered by the interest from England."
Van Gaal is looking to strengthen his midfield ahead of a campaign that will see United fighting on all fronts after returning to the Champions League and with Robin van Persie expected to leave, Schweinsteiger would also bring a wealth of experience that would be missing following the Dutchman's impending exit.
Schweinsteiger certainly has the composure and style that would suit Van Gaal’s United project and would bolster their midfield ranks. Only Philip Lahm has played more accurate passes in the last six Bundesliga seasons that Schweinsteiger (9,954).
