Tottenham set to hand star man new deal

Toby Alderweireld is on the verge of putting pen to paper on a new long-term deal at Tottenham that will see him earn £75,000-a-week, according to The Daily Mail.

The Belgium international has firmly established himself as one of the best defenders in the Premier League since joining Tottenham from Atletico Madrid in 2015 and Mauricio Pochettino is understandably keen to secure his long-term future.

Tottenham are also keen to remove a current £25m release clause in Alderweireld’s current deal that would only become active for rival clubs in 2019 if Tottenham trigger a 12-month extension keeping him at the club until 2020.

Pochettino’s side have already tied down a number of first-team regulars this season and are keen to make Alderweireld the latest star to put any questions about his long-term future to bed.

No outfielder averages more accurate long balls per game in the Premier League this season than Alderweireld (7.2).
