Van Gaal set to be sacked on Monday

Louis van Gaal will learn he will be sacked as Manchester United manager and replaced by former Chelsea boss Jose Mourinho on Monday, according to BBC Sport.

Van Gaal, 64, led United to their first FA Cup title in 12 years when they beat Crystal Palace in extra time on Saturday but almost as soon as the full time whistle went reports circulated suggesting his exit from the club was imminent.

The news comes as no great surprise following two years of underwhelming performances from Van Gaal’s side but the timing does not shed good light on the club or Mourinho’s representative Jorge Mendes, who apparently leaked the news.

The Dutchman still has a year remaining on the three-year deal he signed after the 2014 World Cup and was adamant after the FA Cup final that he would fulfil the final 12 months of his contract before retiring but that no longer appears the case.

Only two managers have finished their time as United manager with a higher win ratio in the league than Van Gaal (51%).
