Manchester United pair out for three weeks

Manchester United manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has revealed Jesse Lingard and Anthony Martial are sidelined for up to three weeks.

Lingard and Martial both picked up injuries in the first half of United’s 2-0 defeat at home to Paris Saint-Germain on Tuesday.

Alexis Sanchez replaced Lingard before half-time and Juan Mata was sent on for Martial at the start of the second half.

United struggled to lay a glove on PSG without two of their best attackers on the pitch and Solskjaer has now confirmed both will miss Monday’s FA Cup trip to Chelsea.

Solskjaer will also be without Martial and Lingard for next weekend’s Premier League clash with Liverpool and both are huge doubts for the return leg of their Champions League tie with PSG next month.

“I think they will be out for two to three weeks,” The Daily Mail quote Solskjaer as saying in his pre-match press conference. “Then you’re looking at it being Mason Greenwood’s time to step in and he’s out for a couple of weeks. That’s the way sometimes the luck goes.

“Anthony and Jesse have done really well for us with their attributes and pace. Now it’s a chance for anyone who plays. Romelu [Lukaku] and Alexis [Sanchez] can show what they can do.”

As well as missing the aforementioned matches, United will also be without Lingard and Martial for matches against Crystal Palace and Southampton.

The news comes at the worst possible time for Solskjaer, as he embarks on a run that will define whether he keeps the United job on a full-time basis.

Only Paul Pogba (11) has scored more Premier League goals than Martial (9) of United players this season.
