Chelsea keen to extend star man’s contract

Chelsea are eager to tie Emerson down to a new deal after the Italy international impressed head coach Frank Lampard in the opening weeks of the season, reports the Daily Mail.

Emerson has leapfrogged Marcos Alonso as the Blues’ starting left-back and has excelled in the opening weeks of the campaign.

Indeed, a WhoScored rating of 7.57 ranks 11th in the Premier League this season and signifies his fine performances under Lampard.

And Chelsea are to reward the 25-year-old with a one-year contract extension.

Emerson’s current deal runs until 2022 and a new contract will see his pay increase from £3.5m to £4.5m per year.

Chelsea keen to extend star man’s contract

The Brazil-born defender joined from Roma for £18m in January 2018, but it wasn’t until the end of last season that he began to earn regular minutes at the expense of Alonso, which included a starting spot in Chelsea’s 4-1 Europa League final win over Arsenal.

Emerson also played the full 90 minutes in Italy’s 3-1 win over Armenia on Thursday night.
