United defender sidelined for at least a month

Manchester United have been dealt a further blow following news Chris Smalling will miss between four and six weeks with a broken toe, according to The Daily Mail.

Smalling, 26, has missed United’s last four matches after picking up a toe injury in their 4-0 defeat away to Chelsea at the end of October.

The England international has come in for criticism from manager Jose Mourinho after not playing through the pain, but the United manager has now been left red faced after it has been revealed he has broken his toe and will now be sidelined for at least a month.

With Eric Bailly also set to miss most of the festive period, it has left Mourinho with just Phil Jones, Daley Blind and Marcos Rojo as his only fit senior central defenders, and Jones has only just returned from a 10-month injury absence.

In the last three Premier League campaigns Smalling has won more aerial duels than any other United player (211)
