Borussia Dortmund ready to hand escape route to Manchester United midfielder

Borussia Dortmund are interested in re-signing Henrikh Mkhitaryan and will continue to monitor his future at Manchester United, claims BBC Sport.

The Armenia international left Dortmund to join United in July 2016 in a deal worth £26.3m but the 28-year-old has endured a turbulent 15 months at Old Trafford.

Mkhitaryan started last season out of the team after struggling to adapt to the demands of the Premier League but appeared to have put that all behind him with a fast start to the current campaign.

However, his performance levels have rapidly dropped in the last four weeks and he was even axed for United’s last two matches.

Jose Mourinho has revealed he will return to the squad for Saturday’s clash at home to Brighton but has warned the midfielder he cannot keep ‘disappearing’ in matches.

With fresh doubts now lingering over Mkhitaryan’s long-term future at the club, Dortmund are ready to offer their former star a way back to the club if United decide to sell him at the end of the season.

Mkhitaryan established himself as one of the best players in the Bundesliga during a three-year stint at Dortmund before securing a lucrative move to United.

In fact, he finished his last season in the Bundesliga (2015/16) as the highest rated WhoScored player (7.90) after playing a direct hand in 26 goals in 31 league appearances (11 goals, 15 assists).

Not only that, but the Armenian won the WhoScored Man of the Match award at least five more times than any other player in the Bundesliga that season (11), but he is yet to replicate his match-winning form in a United shirt.
