Manchester United midfielder Bastian Schweinsteiger is set to undergo a scan on a knee injury sustained on duty with duty with Germany, his national side has confirmed.
Schweinsteiger, 31, has only just returned to first-team action following a two-month injury lay-off because of a knee injury picked up in their FA Cup triumph over Sheffield United at the start of January.
The Germany international stepped up his return to first-team action with cameos against West Ham, Liverpool and Manchester City in recent weeks but now looks set for another time on the sidelines after leaving Joachim Low’s squad for Munich where he will be further assessed.
“World Cup winner Schweinsteiger sustained the injury to his right knee on Tuesday afternoon towards the end of the training statement,” a DFB statement read.
“For further examinations the captain will undergo a MRI scan in Munich with national team doctor Hans-Wilhelm Muller-Wohlfahrt.”
Despite only picking him up fro a snip at a reported £4m, Schweinsteiger has been a huge disappointment at United this season, which is reflected in United’s far superior win ratio (52.9%) without him in the starting XI in the league this season compared to with him in the team from the off (38.5%).
