European sensation on course to break WhoScored.com record

Rennes forward Ousmane Dembele could finish the campaign as the highest rated teenager ever recorded by WhoScored.com.

Dembele, 18, is enjoying an unbelievable campaign in Ligue 1 this season and his performances have seen him linked with a move to just about every European giant.

The France Under-21 international is currently the highest scoring player aged 21 and under across Europe’s top five leagues (12 goals) and he is also closing in on a four-year record to finish a league campaign as the highest rated teenager since WhoScored.com started it’s rating system in 2009.

Mario Gotze is the current occupant of the award, having garnered a WhoScored.com rating of 7.77 as a 19-year-old for Borussia Dortmund.

The Germany World Cup winner played a direct hand in 11 goals in his 17 league appearances that season, as well as completing two tackles per game and creating 3.5 key passes per game.

However, his status as the best teenager in the last seven campaigns is seriously under threat following Dembele’s displays this season (7.71 rating).

The Rennes striker has played a direct hand in 10 league goals in his last seven outings, although the Ligue 1 outfit have hit a poor period at just the wrong time, which could hamper his chances of overcoming Gotze’s rating.

Rennes have lost each of their last two matches 3-0 and will need to quickly bounce back with only four matches remaining.

Regardless, Dembele is still favourite to etch himself into company with the likes of Julian Draxler and Raheem Sterling of teenagers to finish a campaign with the highest WhoScored.com rating across Europe’s top five leagues.
